Cancer is likely to progress in women who smoke and have other cervical cancer risk factors. Without treatment severely dysplastic cells penetrate deeper layers of the cervix and spread to other organs, causing invasive cervical cancer. It usually takes many years for serious complications to develop.

There are about 150 strains of HUman Papillomavirus; the majority of them are harmless, but about 30 strains are sexually transmitter and very dangerous. In many women, infection with certain types of Human papilloma virus is the first step in the progression from a normal cervix to cervical cancer. This is the main cause of cervical cancer. It induces the growth of abnormal cells that can become malignant. HPV info can be gathered from a colposcopy and pap smear.
