The infection of hpv, human papilloma virus, is a large group of strains that include the common wart, plantar wart and vaginal or penile wart.
The types of HPV that cause genital warts are usually spread by skin-to-skin contact. When warts are present the HPV infection is considered active, when the warts are gone the infection is latent in the skin cells - it may or may not be contagious at this time.
